A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's key public works projects.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” declared the country's president.
The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the year before. This project was closely associated with his leadership's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in civilian works. They were built at an rapid pace, defying predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised persistent concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an prompt suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."
In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in full accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these strategic undertakings.
