Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that people who discontinue new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals buying these treatments must be informed of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a reversion to original mass in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Experts propose the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the accelerated weight return.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

People who have come off the jabs explain a intense resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a trigger activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

The struggle is compounded if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural management.
