Trump Administration to Issue 50% Food Stamp Benefits in November

The US administration revealed it would supply partial aid to millions of SNAP beneficiaries as the continuing federal closure approached a historic duration.

Funding Cut Details

Amid increasing uncertainty for the approximately 42 million individuals participating in the SNAP, the agriculture department declared it would utilize contingency funds to maintain benefits, albeit at only 50% of the regular amount participants usually receive.

Money for the initiative officially ended on Saturday due to the US government shutdown, now in its 34th day with no sign of completion.

Legal Developments

The decision came in a judicial submission after previous denials to release urgent funding on alleged legal grounds. A federal judge had ruled the government could not refuse program funds as a result of the shutdown.

Following the judicial ruling, the executive branch announced it would be "honored" to authorize necessary funding for the program.

Implementation Challenges

Authorities noted that funds could start flowing by Wednesday, but stressed the need for additional direction from the legal system on how to properly reallocate funds for SNAP support.

  • Several states have stated it will take days or even extended time to provide benefits to vulnerable recipients.
  • Crowds have been reported at pantries throughout the country.
  • In several locations, public facility areas were transformed into assistance centers.

State Emergency Responses

Various states, including New York, Oregon, and Virginia, announced emergency declarations to allocate temporary money for benefits. However, these amounts were projected to be a small portion of the regular government funding.

The government costs for SNAP total approximately $8 billion per month throughout the United States.
