Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks The Continent's True Danger: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US security policy document offers a misguided view of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "woke" agendas represent an existential threat to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The true danger confronting the EU is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Growth Gap Separating the US and Europe

The data paint a stark contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, while a mere 13.5% growth for the European Union. During this time, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a higher per capita income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly 50% of the global top fifty tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Problem

This widening economic gap is driven by stronger productivity growth in the US, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology dominance is decidedly American. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This gap raises a pressing question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does the EU stand? Most analysts agree it is essentially a contest between two between the US and China, with European nations entering at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of key factors explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic system for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a true unified investment market, a factor that caps the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a bigger population, is divided among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, there are reasons for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to advance substantial change. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for sweeping reforms.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains considerable strengths: skilled workforce, top-tier education systems, and premier labs. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing next-generation tech, it can still significantly boost economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. But, without decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
