Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Zak Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments from skipper Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in multiple conversations following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

But, following the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation after his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his modest returns against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There's no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley finished.
